NAZI PLOT FOILED

ACTION BY AMERICA INTENDED COUP D’ETAT WARSHIPS ON SCENE NEW YORK, July 12. It is now generally believed in Uruguay, Argentina, and other South American countries that the arrival of United States cruisers in Uruguay and Brazil waters nipped in the bud a Nazi plot, ordered in Berlin, for the invasion of Uruguay, to be followed by similar action in Brazil. The arrival of a third cruiser, a week later, in Southern Chile waters, was timed to halt a coup d'etat in that sector of Latin America. Other units of the United States Navy are to be sent to South America.

Full details of the plot to seize Uruguay fell into the hands of the Government. at Montevideo, and were published over the protest of the German Ambassador, under whose personal supervision the coup was to have been carried out. In fact, all the correspondence and details of the Nazi plot were carried to and from Berlin in the Embassy’s mail, which, under diplomatic practice, is not liable to examination or censorship. At the moment, the German Government has advised Uruguay that if any punishment is meted out in the courts to the 12 Nazi leaders, who have been arrested, Germany will regard it as an act of war. Widespread Agencies. Evidence now before the Uruguay Chamber of Deputies reveals that the Nazi plot to absorb the entire South American continent into the Reich was directed from an international headquarters at Montevideo. It also reveals that some of the Nazi master minds are operating in little towns in the interior, and hold for the time being minor posts in the Nazi Party. They are considerably senior to the Gauleiter or Little Fuhrer for Uruguay, Herr Dalldorf. To throw dust in the eyes of the authorities, the Nazi Party operates from “castles" or departments, each of which is said to be ignorant, or professes to he ignorant, of the activities of the other. Thus, while Herr Dalldorf was in charge of spreading the Nazi doctrines, another leader. Herr Fuhrmann, was to be in charge of the armed revolt. Interned sailors of the Graf Spee have been working with Nazi leaders in the interior of Argentina and Uruguay. Several of them were arrested in localities other than the towns where they were interned. The third “castle” is the Gestapo and espionage, directed by Herr Meisner and Herr Klein. Each “castle" is subordinate only to the Nazi Supreme Council in Germany. A fourth leader. Herr Paetz, a modest school teacher, is in charge of “penetration” In schools, colleges, and universities. Plans of Military Action. Now we come to the details of the plot. The entire plan for military action was to be completed in 15 days. Distribution of troops of occupation was as follows: Two regiments of artillery and cavalry at Montevideo, two companies each at Fray Bentos, and Paysandu. a battalion in Salto, another in Bello, two companies at Artilgas, two at Rivera, and a battalion at Jag'uaras. A thousand war veterans were to act as reserve. One battalion of infantry was to maintain order. About 5000cGermans, already in the country, had been made acquainted with the regions where action was to be taken. All Jews, Freemasons, and political leaders were to be eliminated immediately. Guards were to be placed on all small organisations and their records seized. Public employees could remain in the country for the presenl. but German secretaries should be assigned to those in higher positions, and immediate steps taken to organise the country into a German agricultural colony, which would have at. its immediate disposition the lands of the three State banks, the National Mortgage Bank, the State Insurance Bank, and the Bank of the Republic. Lands belonging to absentee landlords wee to be seized, also those who did not wish to live under German domination.
