SOCCER NOTES

WANGANUI COMPETITIONS NOTES AND COMMENTS (By “Waverley.”) By defeating Marist on Saturday Technical Old Boys win the Wanganui Football Association Cup. Having won both trophies so far this season, and remaining unbeaten, the Past Students will be keen to add the Charity Cup to their list.

There is some talk of an extra round being played for the Association Cup after the Charity Cup matches are over, but this should have no bearing on the trophy.

This Saturday will see the start Or the Charity Cup matches. The reason : for their being brought forward is to try to get all Charity Cup games | played on Cook’s Gardens before the, ■ association’s lease expires at the end ■ of August. Then, if other games are to be played, Victoria Park will still be available. * 1 It was hoped to field a “past players" team in the Charity Cup, but most players having disposed of their,, gear, there seems little prospect of an - Old Timers’ team taking part. However, if Eastbrooke and Technical > College A are .promoted it should help to add Interest to the event. Last year Technical College juniors reached the final, only to be bearen < by Eastbrooke. This year the school- : boys are playing well and might get as far as last year’s team. The ex- 1 perience gained by taking part would be of great value and should provide a good try-out before the team takes part in the secondary schools tournament which is being held at New' Plymouth during the September holidays.

At the primary schools tournament, which is to be held in Napier, Wanganui will be represented. It is hoped to be able to present representative caps to the boys chosen for the primary representatives, and the associa Lion would be grateful if any old players or followers of the code fed disposed to contribute towards a fund for this purpose. The thrill the youngsters get in being presented with caus should be reward enough for the donors. Any who wish to contribute are asked to get in touch with “Jim Thomson, the honorary treasurer.

Latest reports from England show that West Ham United won the Empire Cup in England, and Rangers won the Scottish Cup. This year the international should have been played at Wembley, but owing to the war the game was played at Hampden Park. Glasgow. The result is not to hand yet, but war or no war, Tommy Walker still retained his place at inside right in the Scotisn team. It was proposed to close the gates after the attendance had reached 50,000.

This year, owing to the war, the Scottish League was divided into the ' main sections, East and West, with the section winners to meet in the final. The finalists are Falkirk and Glasgow Rangers, but as in tl«* international the result is not to hand. Owing to the limited number allowed to watch soccer matches at home, ’ clubs have been compelled to cut down expenses. For this reason Glasgow Celtic have dispensed with the services of their trainer, James a former Scotish International. McMenemy was one of the cleverest inside men the game produced in Scotland and to-day he has four sons all playing first grade football in the Old Country. “I sold them through the “Wanganui Chronicle” Classified Advertisements—and bought these new things.” This remark is one of many made by 1 readers who have discovered how profitable are “Chronicle” Classified Advertisements.
