Admitted to Kawakawa Hospital last night suffering from gunshot wounds in the head, Manga Pera, aged 55, single, Maori labourer living in Kaikohe native settlement, is in a serious, but not critical, state. It is alleged that on seeing two nieces, aged 18 and 21, talking to two youths he chased them home and thrashed them. On the girls going outside and waving to the youths Pera is alleged to have fired two shots at them, but missed. It is then alleged that he returned to the house and attempted suicide by shooting.
