BRITISH REPLY TO NAZI TORPEDO-BOATS

PATROL VESSELS LOST BY NAVY DEATH OF SURVIVOR OF THE COURAGEOUS LONDON, July 30. There is reason to believe that the Admiralty has found counter-measures against the German motor torpedoboats which have been raiding convoy* and earning the title “night-hawks.” Results are already disappointing to the Germans and* are likely to be much more disappointing in the neai future. An Admiralty communique states that the auxiliary patrol yacht Gulzar was sunk yesterday as a result of an enemy air attack. There was no loss of lite. The Admiralty also announces: “Information has been received that the patrol vessel Guillemot shot down one German dive-bomber during an attack on that ship by German aircraft yesterday. No damage and no casualties were suffered in the Guillemot. The trawler Staunton has been sunk by an enemy mine. The entire crew of 13 was lost. The Admiralty reports that mercantile losses by enemy action for the week ended July 21 were 11 British, totalling 37,577 tons, one Aljed oi 2088 tons, and six neutral of 10,192 tons, a total loss slightly below the weekly average since the outbreak and rather less than one fourth of the highest weekly total. The total German losses to July 28 were about 908,000 tons, and Italian 254,000 tons. About 20,000 Lons formerly neutral and now enemy controlled, were also sunk. Commander C. W. Woodhouse, a survivor of the aircraft-carrier H.M.S. Courageous, sunk by a torpedo in the North Sea on September 17, 1939, died from his injuries. He was lying alone in a private ward when the Queen visited the hospital in March. She tiptoed to the bedside and spoke a few words of cheer.
