WIN AND PLACE

Totalisator System At Waverley FINE AUTUMN FIELDS RIDERS FOR SATURDAY Win-and-placc betting will operate at the Waverley Racing Club’s autumn meeting, which will be held next Saturday, and with fine fields engaged in each event there should be some good prices obtaining about some of the runners. Three “place” dividends will be paid in fields of eight or more starters.

Seven years ago win-and-place betting was tried at Waverley for the Labour Day meeting, but fields were not very large and with a limited amount of money during the depression the turnover was only 16195 10s. Still, that was substantially above the previous year's £4627 10s. At the 1932 spring meeting, Refresher won the Waverley Cup and Korokio won the Brewer Handicap, High Commissioner and Glenvane being other winners that day. A year later, when win-and-place betting operated. All Humbug beat Midian in a field of six starters for the Waverley Cup, and Knollmere scored an easy win in the Brewer Handicap, in which there was only a “win” pool as two of the five starters were bracketed. Korokio returned irom the Trentham meeting to win the Waverley Cup in 1934, and Lady Kyra scored in the Brewer Handicap. On the same day Harvest Moon secured a double, taking the Morton Memorial and the Jackson Hack Memorial. The turnover at that meeting was £7354 10s.

In 1935, when Silk Sox sprang a surprise by defeating Refresher in the Waverley Cup, and Limulus won the Brewer Handicap, the totalisator handled £7050 10s,<the single-pool system being used. The following year there was a substantial increase to

£11,138 10s, the Cup winner being Fer sen, who went on to score in the Nev Zealand Cup. Farmer won the Brewe: Handicap, and Mr. F. Bristol brough off a “double” with Airing and San hedrim.

The steady increase was maintained at the 1937 meeting, the amount handled being £12,341. That was the day that Friesland won the Cup and Airing took the Brewer Handicap. A year later the weather was not promising but the totalisator’ showed another increase to £13,515. a deadheat being registered by Race Call and Lickem in the sprint, and Brazen King winning the Waverley Cup. Last year, when Hunting Cat won the Cup in a desperate finish with Namara and Wotan, and Fiancee had a lucky win over Race Call in the Brewer Handicap, the tote turnover was £13,492 10s. Thus evidence was provided for the continued popularity of the Waverley Racing Club's spring meeting. An autumn meeting was held at Waverley on Saturday, April 23, 1938, and proved immediately successful, the totalisator handling £12.482. The principal event was the Patea County Cup, and it resulted in a win for the Marton-owned Wildflower, with Gaily second and Naughty Marietta and Tahurangi dead-heating for third. Mittie won the Wairoa Handicap. Student Prince the Ngutuwera Hack Cup, and Royal Fire the steeplechase. Last year the totalisator dropped a little to £11,743, but it was again a successful meeting. A feature was the dead-heat between Mataroa and Silvanus in the Patea County Handicap, and Life Guard won the Wairoa Handicap. Chief Lord scored his first success in a race, taking the Symes Memorial, and Windsor Chief sprang a surprise in the Hack Cup. Sporting Song won the Waverley Steeplechase. The principal event next Saturday will be the Besley Memorial, this tak-

ing the place of the Patea County Cup, and with a field of seventeen acceptors it should be a splendid race, with the issue very open. Ten are down to contest the Wairoa Handicap, and there is a large field of nineteen for the Ngutuwera Hack Cup, in which such promising performers as Dynasty, Colossal Chief, Piastre, Chief Lord and Kilometre are engaged. The Waverley Steeplechase has also attracted an acceptance of fourteen, and as all other events have been well supported it should be a great day’s racing, given fine weather. Dynasty* will have N. R. McKenzie in the saddle on Saturday, and Rehearsal will be ridden by K. Chote, who will probably also be on Golden Pam. B. H. Morris will ride Colossal Chief and Vaalslea, G. R. Tattersail will be on Caution. Chief Lord and Counter, and S. Waddell will be on Courting. V. Dye has been engaged to ride Raidora, Flamberge, War Lap and Judgment, D. Ryan will be on Fiancee, H. Stewart on Calliope, and J. Toki on Disturbed. H. N. Wiggins and W. J. Broughton will, it is expected, also attend the meeting.
