BAND DISPLAY ‘ Own Correspondent.) PATEA, Feb. 19. Despite unfavourable weather approximately 500 attended the Patea Municipal Band display held on Sunday at the Patea Domain. After the Patea band had played the National Anthem the Mayor. Mr. E. F. Hemingway, heartily welcomed the Hawera Pipe Band, which had come from Hawera to assist in the display. A wish was expressed by the Mayor that an opportunity would arise in the future when the kindness of the Hawera Pipe Band could be returned. Mr. Hemingway wished the Patea Municipal Band success in Wellington in the Centennial band contest, in which they will be taking part. Following the Mayor’s speech the .Hawera Pipe Band gave a demonstration of the quickstep, in which they won fourth place in the Centennial band contest in Wellington. The Patea Band followed with a selection entitled “Waltz Thoughts.’’ The drum-major’s display presented by the Hawera Pipe Band, made an impressive picture. The march was led by Drum-Major J. Nairn. The programme also consisted of the following items: "A Souvenir of the Opera.” by the Patea Band; "Trio,” by Pipe-Major Campbell, Pipe-Ser-vant Campbell, and Piper Stuart Nairn <all of Hawera Pipe Band*. The band display was concluded with the Patea contest march. "Tarador,” presented by the Patea Band and lead by Drum-Major Nairn <of the Hawera Pipe Band). Then finally followed the inspection of the Patea Band by Drum-Major Nairn assisted cy Staff-Sergeant Hutchinson. AMATEUR ATHLETICS The annual meeting of the Patea Athletic Association was held on Friday. Rev. Father Rohan, who presided, referred to the loss sustained by the association in the deaths of Messrs. Hobbs and Boden. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: — Patron, Mr. E. Hemingway; president, Mr. George Hurley; vice-presidents, '*me as last year and Rev. Father Rohan; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr. C. P. Bates; hon. auditor, Mr. E. F. Hemingway; organising secretary for swimming sports Mr. Linehan; fool ball and basketball. Mi. Hucker. A decision was reached to hold the

annual sports on Friday, April 5. Entries close on March 20. SHLMAHNG TUITION Mr. A. B. Currie, of Patea, has consented to give the Hurleyville School children a course of instruction in swimming. Mr. Currie is an efficient and experienced instructor. He commenced the course to-day (Monday) at the Centennial Memorial Baths at Patea beach.
