NO REDUCTION OF CHARGES

ROAD TRANSPORT SCHEDULE WANGANUI FARMERS' UNION | REPORT DENIED STATEMENT BY ALLIANCE SECRETARY A statement by Ihe Wanganui provincial office of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union that the net result of negotiations with the No. 2 Transport Licensing Authority (Mr. P. Skoglund) was a reduction in Wanganui district cartage charges, is denied by the secretary of the Wanganui branch of the New Zealand Road Transport Alliance, who has set out figures for publication. “I know nothing of a ten per cent, increase on the cartage of lambs, referred to in the report of the Farmers’ Union, having been granted, either in October or at any other time,” Mr. Gohns stated yesterday. “Thus it could never have been eliminated, and for the information of all users and operators in the road transport industry it is only right that the facts should be made known. “In March. 1939,” Mr. Gohns stated, Mr Skoglund fixed the charges of tarnsport cartage in the Wanganui, Wa/lotara. and Waimarino Counties, and in the southern Dart of the Patea County, as well as that part of the Rangitikei County, including Marton i and Turakina, exempting the Para- < para Road. < “Mr, Skoglund amended the schedule ' for the cartage of fat lambs to works 1 and the cartage rates for store sheep ■ on October 16, 1939, and on October < 30 he again amended the schedule by I extending it to the Parapara.” A further amendment to the sched- ; ule was later advised, said Mr, Gohns, i this being the deletion of some of the i information on page four of the ( ischedule as follows: ! For more than 35 miles, one-fifth of a penny a mile A per lamb was added. The charges ,j operated as from and including De* 1 cember 11, 1939. The prices covered by the whole schedule as existing at December 11. 1939, and including the amended prices shown above were to be increased by 3 1-3 per cent., operative as from and including January 1, 1940. Mr. Gohns stated that the price schedule in force according to the chairman of the No. 2 Licensing Authority, was the schedule in March, 1939, together with all the r amendments up to and including De- c cember, 1939, and not as stated by the i Farmers’ Union.
