ANNUAL CONCERT

GIRLS’ COLLEGE BRIGHT PROGRAMME PRESENTED. There was a large attendance of parents and friends of pupils and many old girls at the annual concert of the Wanganui Girls’ College in the Assembly Hall last night. The programme was varied and the items were all of a high standard and were well received. The programme opened with a bracket of numbers by the Girls’ College and Collegiate School Orchestra, the numbers being Beethoven’s “Slow Movement from First Symphony" and Schubert's “Minuet From Third Symphony.” Zita Smalley recited “Lavender ’Gown” (W. Rand) and Lois Weston played “Gavotte” (Balfour Gardiner) as a piano solo. “Loure” (P. de Paepen) as a ’cello solo by Glenor Ford was an attractive item. A choir composed of members of the third and fourth forms sang Handel's "Silent Worship,” Brahms’ “The Blacksmith" and “Flow Gently, Sweet Afton,” the words of which were written by Robert Burns. Helen Widdowsen played "Sicilienne” (Couperin), as a violin solo, Elaine Hulse played’ Beethoven's "Sonata in C Sharp Minor” from Opus 27. No. 2 as a piano solo and Joan McElwain recited J. R. Lowell's "Singing Leaves.” Debussy's ‘Golliwog's Cake Walk” was a delightful number as a piano due by Mona Cook and Jean Williams. The school choir, accompanied by the orchestra. “O Wert Thou in the Cauld Blast” (Mendelssohn) and "Blow. Wind. Blow” (F. Challinor). A vocal solo "The Ships of Arcady” (M. Head) by Penrhyn Hutton and the senior drill display brought the first half of the programme to an end. The second half opened with a play "It is Genius” by Marjorie Smith, the play being written around authentic incidents in the boyhood of Mozart. The first scene was in the home of Leopold Mozart in Salzburg and the second scene was a private salon in I the Emperor's palace at Leipzig. The characters were: Wolggang Mozart, E. Martin; Leopold Mozart, E. Hulse; ! his wife. L. Sadler; Marianne. C. I Wylds: emperor, J. Stone: empress, V. Townsend; Marie Antoinette. A. | Allan; courtier. L. Graham. The play ■■■ as delightfully acted and the characi terisations were realistic. i Mona Cook scored a hit with another piano solo "In a Woodland Glen” (Barratt). Gwytha Haggle recited “Queen Catharine's Defence” by Shakespeare, Jocelyn Stone Chopin s “Prelude in B Flat" as a piano solo Elaine Hulse and Relvyn Collins played Schubert’s "Hark, Hark, the Lark” as a piano duo. Ruth Taylot and Miss Chipperfield played “Romance from Suite” (Rachmaninoff' | and Bessie Christie played “Etude ir : C Sharp Minor” (Chopin). Anothei ‘ popular number was Mollie Lowrt I and Betty McKie in a duet “The Apple i Woman.” Una Robb sang “Villanelle’ • with feeling.
