C. H. MATTHEWS

FIRST RUN SINCE 1937-38 SIGNS THAT HIS FORM IS GOOD C. H. Matthews, British Empire three and six miles track champion and record holder who was off the, scene last year because of illness, made his first competitive appearance since the 1937-38 season at the end of last month. He ran in a mile scratch race, and was content merely to use the event as a valuable training adjunct. He finished second to the New Zealand junior half-mile title-holder, D. Shaw, in very slow time, 4min. 52 3-ssec. Matthews moved easily, and there is no particular reason why he should not be the same brilliant man as two years ago. He accepted an invitation to compete at Timaru a week ago. It was there, in 1938, in one of his last runs before his illness, that he made a national two-mile record.
