ITALIAN AEROPLANES HAVE ARRIVED

Although the large-scale Russian offensive has not yet attained a crushing momentum, the Finns are still falling back slowly before the southern advance, employing guerrilla tactics successfully. M. Kallio. President of Finland, in an inspiring Independence Day speech, called the people to the banner in defence of their homes and Western civilisation. He invoked Divine assistance for the mighty task, and asked whether other nations would tolerate their destruction. He gave •’No Surrender” as the watchword of his fighting forces. The Finns claim to have captured or destroyed 60 Russian tanks, to have inflicted heavy losses on Russian infantry, anti have taken 15.0 M Russians prisoner who surrendered because of hunger. A campaign for active support of Finland is under way in Sweden. Further defence measures have been taken and it is reported that reconstruction of Cabinet on a broader basis is Intended. Considerable feeling in support of Finland was shown in the Danish Parliament, when members of all parties walked out when a Communist rose to speak. President F. D. Roosevelt has sent an anniversary message to Finland and is to ask the American Congress to remit payments of debt made by Finland. Spanish and Hungarian leaders have spoken criticising the. Russian invasion, and publie opinion in Italy is indignant against Moscow. It i.s authoritatively stated in London that Germany has sent many rifles, partly of Czech origin. Io Finland, and offered further supplies at lower prices. It is confirmed that about 60 Italian plains have arrived at Helsinki. It is known that British firms are also sending supplies to Finland. The Italian Press continues to loudly praise the Finns’ heroism and deflates that the Finnish Air Force is showing superiority.
