Archdeacon J. R. Young, of Christ Church, Wanganui, was the speaker at the break-up function of the Palmerston North Technical School last night. The Bishop of Wellington, the Rt. Rev. H. St. Barbe Holland, who ar- 1 rived in Auckland on Wednesday after an extended holiday in England, will return to Wellington to-morrow. Mr. V. C. Stafford, minister-elect of the Church of Christ, Vivian Street, and his family have arrived at Wellington from Invercargill. Mr. Stafford’s ministry begins to-morrow. Mr. D. L. Grant, of Hamilton, has been promoted to succeed Mr. G. D. Aschmann as resident electrical engineer to lhe Southland Electric Power Supply. Mr. Grant was formerly a member of the Southland staff. Mr. D. Woolcott, of the Wanganui Technical College teaching staff, received instructions yesterday to report immediately to Trentham military camp. He has been given a position on lhe intelligence staff of the New Zealand special force. Sympahy with the relatives of the late Rev. J. G. Wheatley, who was formerly minister at Upper Aramoho, was expressed at the monthly meeting of the Wanganui Presbytery when a memorial minute was adopted. Canon W. G. Williams, superintendent of the Maori Mission for the Wellington and Waiapu Dioceses, is a visitor Lo Wanganui. Canon Williams was formerly minister al St. Laurence’s Anglican Church, Aramoho. After twelve years’ association with the Seatoun School as assistantmaster, Mr. R. Gilpin is to be transferred to the Chatham Islands as headmaster. The chairman of lhe school committee, Mr. E. J. Elliott, said at the annual demontsration held at the school on Wednesday that the news of Mr. Gilpin’s departure would be received with regret by all. Mr. J. B. Cotterill, M.P. for Wanganui, who leaves for camp at Trentham to-morrow, was farewelled by his former workmates at the East Town railway workshops yesterday. After Mr Cotterill had briefly addressed the large gathering he was accorded musical honours and was given three cheers. The following resolution was carried with acclamation ‘That this mass meeting of employee.-; of the East Town ’shops, while deploring the need to take up arms, admires the action of Mr. Cotterill in cffeGng himself for military service anti trusts that he will have a safe leiurn to resume his duties as Member lor Wanganui.”
