SUMMER RACING

Woodville Leads Up j To Holidays STRENUOUS CAMPAIGN AHEAD NOTES AND COMMENTS The Woodville meeting to-morrow and Monday, and the Waipa meeting on Saturday of next week, will lead up to the busy racing period during the midsummer holidays. Acceptances for the Waipa meeting are due to-night, and the indications are that it will be still another successful Waikato fixture. Wanganui horses engaged at Woodville include Wotan and Entail in the Bolton Handicap, Algerian in the Maiden Stakes, Ringcraft in the Nursery Handicap, and Dynasty in the . Borough Hack Handicap. The Fordell stable will have Russian Ballet ■ and Ruatiti engaged on Monday. The racebook for Woodville con- ' tains only one bracket, that being Sleeveless and Tableau in the Oete . Handicap. Kathbella, who hails from the same I stable as Beaulivre and the Feilding j sprint winner Brunhild, promises to , be one of the hardest to beat in the I Oete Handicap to-morrow. From all ; accounts Russian Ballet was rather lucky to beat her on the opening day |’ at the Hastings spring meeting, and i on the second day. after they had ' dead-heated, Kathbella was returned < as the winner following an inquiry , into interference. That was Kath- 1. bella’s latest appearance. • * * * The New Plymouth trainer H. Dulieu has three representatives en- . gaged in the Nursery Handicap at. Woodville. They are Ringling, Lucky | Lulu and Army Girl (Rulanut—Joy | Box). The first-named is owned by , the Smith brothers, of Wotan fame, ■ but is raced on lease by her trainer. . The field for the Maiden Stakes at Woodville to-morrow numbers twenty-one, and if there are no defections the race will be run in two divisions, with eleven in the first; division and ten in the second. Those in the first division are Hunting Dawn, Algerian, Goldcraft, Vai Fere, Newbury Queen, Daregain, Pharisee, Khyber, Game Pit, Parian and Kotua. | In the second division are Mimetical, ■ Ngeri, Moradabad, Squeers, Waimutu, Don Quex, Parlato, Greatford. Great Fair and Last Acre. Ringcraft will be making his third appearance with the colours up when he strips for the Nursery Handicap at ( Woodville to-morrow. The big Ringmaster gelding was third in the Wellesley Stakes and followed that up with a second placing to Black Robe ; n the two-year-old handicap the last day at Trentham. He has been doing I good work on the local tracks, and yesterday morning he was not bustled to run three furlongs on the course proper in 38sec. The meeting between Ringcraft and Ringling at Woodville to-morrow ,is i being eagerly awaited, as both are by I Ringmaster and both were bred at j the Koatanui Stud by Mr. G. M. Cur- | rie. whose colours Ringcraft wilt ■ carry. It was generally agreed that • Ringling's form the first day at Feilding was not her best, and the im- i fovement on the second day, when she scored a hollow victory, was well j anticipated. Ringling is a half-sister I to Varimond, their dam being the j Pombal— Motley mare Variable. H Wanganui Debutant Stakes form can be accepted as a reliable guide, i Lucky Lulu must have a fairly good ■ chance in the Nursery Handicap at Woodville to-morrow. At Wanganui | Lucky Lulu, a Foxbridge filly from : Lady Lulu, was second to Indore, I beaten a neck, and she appears likely i to improve with racing. She is t trained by H. Dulieu, whose colours ' wall be carried by Ringling. A half-sister to the well-performed ’ Gold Rod will make her debut at . Woodville to-morrow in the Nursery . Handicap. This is the Tiderace— 1 Oreum filly Oragon. who is raced by ; har breeder Mr. T. H. Lowry. Oragon ; is reported to have plenty of pace. The South Island horseman. L. J. > Ellis, has not completed his plans for | any holiday riding, but has several prospects. He will to north eai lv. as he intends to ride at the Waipa meeting on December 16. before continuing his journey to Auckland. * At the Takanini track on Tuesday, under a good hold, Kelly (Gilchristl . came home the last three furlongs of his work in 40 l-ssec. Kelly continues to thrive and hit out with all his former dash, says the New Zealand Herald. The best gallop of Tuesday morning , at Ellerslie was credited to Arvakur ; i Cur wen i and Orelio (Smith!, who, after taking 13 3-ssec. for a slow first furlong got to the end of half a mile In 50sec. with nothing between them at the finish, although Orelio appeared to get slightly the worse of the start. Both are likely to be strong contenders for honours in the Railway Handicap. Riccarton will be represented at the Auckland Racing Club's meeting by! four jockeys. C. T. Wilson will accompany H. Cutts to ride the Clifford horses, Paper Slipper, Wild Talk and Great Swoop, while A. Messervy will go with T. H. Gillett, to handle Mr. i. Hays pair. Doria and Spartan. A. E. Ellis will make the trip, with Beau Vite and Amigo as his engagements so far. At Ellerslie on Tuesday Flood Tide (Coleman) hit out in resolute style over seven furlongs in 1.30 and pleased by the solid manner in which he was running on at the end. He ran the last six furlongs in 1.16 and the last three in 39sec. There seems no doubt that Floed Tide has derived a great deal of benefit from his racing at Ellerslie
