TAIHAPE NOTES

ANGLICAN GARDEN PARTY Fine weather prevailed for the annual garden party held in the vicarage grounds on Wednesday in aid of St. Margaret’s Anglican Church. Stalls were erected in shady spots ot the picturesque surroundings and steady business was transacted during the afternoon, while games and competitions added to the attractions of the occasion. Stalls were heavily laden with goods when the garden party opened but by nightfall there was hardly a thing left in many cases. The following is a list of the stall-holders: Produce stall. Mesdames W. H. Adair and R. J. Gibbs; guild stall, Mesdames Robinson, Prescott; cake stall. Mesdames G. Ward and W. White; sweets, Mesdames D. George and V. Capill; nail driving, Mrs. R. H. Smith; afternoon tea, Mesdames A. Mack, H. Holmes and helpers. The support accorded the venture is regarded as most satisfactory and the members of the ladies' guild, under the presidency of Mrs. W. H. Maclean, have every reason to feel gratified with the success of their efforts. UTIKU SPORTS CLUB The Utiku Sports Club held a meeting last Friday to discuss the question ot whether the club should carry on or disband. The club has been inactive for the past four years, the last sports meeting having been held on Boxing Day, 1935. O’Keefe.

Apologies were received from Messrs. F. Beuck and J. Loughnane. The treasurer, Mr. N. Anderson, reported that the club had a credit balance of £23 5s 9d, with a few small accounts amounting to approximately £3 to be paid. After a lengthy discussion it was decided to carry on the following officers were elected: President, Mr. J. Gilchrist secretary, Mr. M. O’Brien; vice-presidents, Messrs. R. Dean. W. Foley, A. O’Keefe, with power to add. The subscription was fixed at ss. r.s.a. membership The financial membership of the Taihape and District Returned Soldiers’ Association at the end of October was 171, which places the association in 32nd. position on the Dominion ladder. Auckland is first with 3055 financial members, while Christchurch is second with 2900 members and Wellington third with 2488. Other figures are as follow: Dunedin 2304, South Canterbury 550, Wairarapa 548, Gisborne 450, Wanganui 448, Waikato 427, and Palmerston North 424. The above figures refer to the financial membership of the associations mentioned and not the total membership.

WRESTLING SATURDAY NIGHT'S ATTRACTION The bout between George Walker and Jack Clarke on Saturday, December 9 should produce some first-class wrestling as the men are well matched and both make use of th"back loop slam” as a match wjnner. When interviewed recently, Walker stated that he was very fit and he certainly looked it. Clark is also very 'fit and if he produces the form he displayed when he was in New Zealand last with the Dominion Union team, then the local "fans” are in for a treat. The visiting amateurs are from Wellington and one, Naga, is the Hindu 10-stone champion. It is now over two years since a wrestling match was held in Taihape and this is the "swan song" of the Ranffitikei Association, Inability to «et 'matches, poor support, indifferent matching by the Dominion Wrestling Union, coupled with other difficulties, has made it impossible for the association to carry on, but it is hoped that an organisation can be formed in Taihape to promote occasional matches.
