REFERENCES IN BRITISH COMMONS Received Dec. 6, 30.30 p.m. LONDON, Dec. 5. Mr. Tom Smith, in the House of Commons, urged the Government to model its old-age assistance on the Australian and New Zealand schemes. Mr. Jenkins paid a tribute to New Zealand's old-age pensions, which were approximately 100 per cent, higher than Britain’s. Mr. A. A. Somerville asked: "Is not .that due to financial help from Britain and the fact that standard prices are given New Zealand farmers as a result of competition it'.: Britain, for which reason we are unable to provide better social services?” Mr. Jenkins said the Labour Government had established new rates but did not adopt the Tory policy of reducing everything after 1931. Consequently, New Zealand was infinitely better oft.
