TENNIS COMMENT

RESULTS OF INTER-CLUB MATCHES NEEDED HINTS TO PLAYERS (By A. N. Campbell.) Club secretaries can greatly assist the conduct oi the Wanganui L.T.A. by advising the secretary, Mr. A. W. J. Peacock, of the result of inter-club matches more promptly. Results are supposed to be handed in on the Monday morning following matches, but so far Mr. Peacock has been left in the dark by many clubs. It is only fair that results be notified promptly as the second round fixtures often follow the next week-end and clubs engaged should be given reasonable notice to select teams. Likewise ranking matches decisions should be handed to the sole selector, Mr. D. G. O’Toole, directly the game is finished. Disregard of this request often leads to confusion and players might find themselves omitted from the next round engagements. ♦ * * * Friendly inter-club matches have been successfully resuscitated during the last two seasons and the club that is taking most interest in this respect is Wanganui East. Having such a large number of courts lends itself to this project and club members are all enabled to take part in at least one club fixture during the course of a season. Rata, Hunterville, Westmere and Okoia are a few of the clubs entertained and assisted and these matches have done much to bring about friendly relationship between country clubs and the association. One young player the other evening was so annoyed with himself serving double faults and making other errors that he continually threw his racket down or far arvay and called mutely on the hearers to witness h.s bad play. Fortunately, there were very few players present and t doubt whether any except his opponent witnessed the exhibition. This young player should be taught a lesson to control himself. No one is interested in fits of petty tempers and his behaviour on crowded courts would be most objectionable. The surface of the court was not improved by his action, nor was the racket gaining any benefit. Champions are supposed to be temperamental but the public does not applaud any of their outbursts, yet allows them a certain amount of latitude, .realising that their nerves are highly strung in match play. This young referred to is not even a good player and any mistakes he was making were simply due to his ignorance of the fundamentals of the game. Some good practice against the volley board would be indicated and his tennis would doubtless improve.
