CLEARING OF LAND
DEMONSTRATION AT OHAKUNE ; MODERN METHODS TO BE FSED. ■ Plans have been made by the Public Works Depai trnent ana Department for a demonstration at OhaKune, of clearing land by machinery. The demonstration is to take place next Tuesday. I sc of Up-to-date Machinery. When the Minister of Labour, Hon. P. C. Webb, visited Wanganui recently, he said that one oi the intentions oi Ihe Government was to make machinery available for the clearing of land, thus making it productive. He pointed out that a great deal of land now overgrown with scrub and second growth, if brought into production, would greatly aid the Dominion in supplying the needs ol Great Britain in war time. The demonstration at Ohakune is to have special reference to the stumping of land and four tractors and equipment are to be used. It is to be held on portion of Mr. D. J. Berry's property and is being arranged by the joint efforts of the Ministers of Lands and Public Works. An Important Matter. “This is one ot the most important matters that has come before us for a long time,” said Cr. J. Siddells, to the Wanganui City Council last night, when an invitation to attend the demonstration was received. “I have been urging closer settlement for some considerable time, but very little has been done. This step to clear land may end in the closer l settlement of the land from here to Ohakune and I think that members of the council should know whether it is going to be a financial success.” Ohakune is going to become the vegetable garden of the North Island in the days to come.” The council accepted the inv
