THE HOME OF COMPASSION

THE am mal appeal in the Chronicle which Mrs. Kitchen makes on behalf of the Hume of Compassion in Wanganui this year, calls for contributions especially from young people, who are asked to contribute one shilling each for the support of the inmates of the home. In the days of our youth, pain and suffering do not often touch us, either personally or vicariously. It is an easy matter then to forget that such exist. But they arc there, and as the years pass us by human infirmities press themselves more and more upon our notice. Older people arc therefore more susceptible to appeals for those who have been permanently laid aside, and younger people are to be excused for their apparent thoughtlessness. They arc not to be so accused; they arc unconscious of the problem and of the pain, and it would be undesirable indeed for their sunny days to be marred by a too close proximity to suffering. Still, it is there, the sufferer still needs his assuagement, and he who provides even a small modicum of relief enriches himself beyond price. It is to be hoped that there will be found in shops, offices and factories, someone active enough to initiate collections on behalf of the Home of Compassion. The Chronicle will receive subscriptions to this cause.
