SPECIAL FORCE

WANGANUI RECRUITS DISTRICT ENLISTMENTS MORE THAN 1000. More than 1000 men in the Wanganui military district have volunteered for service in the Special Military Force. At present 417 men from the district are serving in camps as members of the first echelon and more than 600 have volunteered for service in the second echelon. Since it was published that the first echelon was to serve overseas, recruiting has been brisker. The Wanganui military district extends as far south as Levin and as far north as Raetihi and and National Park. The army office has not yet received advice as to the date on which Maori recruits will enter camp. The total number of Maori recruits for the special battalion is 48 in the Wanganui military district. One officer and two men have entered camp. Captain P. P. Tahiwi and Messrs. Keriti Scott and A. K. Takarangi. Of 27 men already examined, eight were passed fit, 15 were temporarily unfit and four were permanently unfit.
