MARTON NEWS

ST. STEPHEN’S GUILD SATISFACTORY BULB SHOW. "Under the conditions we have done remarkably well,” said the vicar, Rev. W. Raine, speaking at a meeting of St. Stephen's Guild in the Parish Hall on Monday afternoon, when the bal-ance-sheet of the recent bulb show was under discussion. There were two things, he said, that affected the show —the outbreak of war and the petrol restrictions. “However,” said Mr. Raine, “we have every reason to be satisfied with the result.” The balance-sheet submitted showed that there had been a drop in the receipts, but this, it was said, was expected because the show was of oneday instead of the usual two-day event. Receipts amounted to £lB7 7s 4d, chief items being stalls £132 7s 4d, door takings £25 Bs, donations ±l9 17s 9d. The expenses totalled £62 9s, prize money amounting to £2B 12s, leaving a profit of £124 18s 4d. The vicar then brought up the question of the allocation of the balance of the money. Recently, he said, it was decided that proceeds from bulb shows should go to debt extinction. However, the parish was faced with the enormous expense this year of painting the church and buildings. For these renovations the sum of £2OO was required and Mr. Raine suggested that the proceeds from the recent show go towards the painting. He then asked for a discussion, and fol-

lowing this those present decided in favour of the suggestion.

Votes of thanks were accorded Mrs. F. R. H. Brice and helpers for providing lunches on the dav of the show and Miss Harding for producing the play at the evening entertainments. METHODIST SUNDAY SCHOOL ANNIVERSARY DAY CELEBRATIONS One of the outstanding treats at the anniversary day services of the Marton Methodist Sunday School on Sunday was the singing by the combined church and Sunday School choirs, under the leadership of Mr. K. Fear, whose work in training the choirs is worthy of mention. Special childrens anthems were sung. There were good attendances at both the morning and evening services, the attendance aL the latter being particularly large. The preacher was the Rev. J. H. Allan, of Feilding, and he delivered two inspiring addresses appropriate to dhe occasion. An instrumental trio, comprising Miss F. Winchcombe (piano), Miss I. Winchcombe (violin) and Misls E. Powell (organ) rendered a pleasing item. Last night saw the wind-up to the celebrations with a tea and conceit in the Sunday School Hall which was packed with children. The impromptu concert, consisting of 20 items, was a splendid effort, and following this the Rev. W. B. Cuming presented prizes to the successful Sunday School children. Miss Emens read the annual report, which disclosed the Sunday School to be in a very healthy financial position. GIFTS FOR THE NAVY In response to an appeal for contributions as a Christmas cheer for the Navy, the Marton branch of the Navy League were, on Monday, enabled to forward to Lieutenant-Commander Sleeman, c/o Headquarters of the Navy League, Wellington, one case of goods. Included in the goods forwarded were 19 cakes, several hundred cigarettes, playing cards and a large selection of books. These were handed into the Marton branch by members of the Navy League, and were packed yesterday by Mrs. H. F. Arkwright, Miss ~L. M. Willis, Mr. F. Purnell and Mr. C. C. McDonald. MOUNTED RIFLES The local troop of the 6th Manawatu Mounteds (Motorised) held tiieir final parade of the year on Monday night. Adjutant Neilson and Ser-geant-Major Holmes were present, the 1 ormer inspecting the troop. Later the sergeant-major put them through an elementary drill preparatory to a guard-mounting display. The next parade is to be held early in February. MARTON CIVIC THEATRE “THE DRUM” “The Drum,” which is finally showing at the Civic Theatre this (Wednesday) evening, is one of the most ambitious productions ever attempted by Alexander Korda. Photographed in technicolour, the picture stars Sabu, the sensational child star who made his memorable debut in “Elephant Boy.” Roger Livesy, Valrie Hobson and Raymond Massey fill the other leading roles, while a strong supporting cast includes Desmond Tester, Edward Lexy and David Tree.
