W.D.F.U. REST ROOM

GOLD PROGRESS REPORTED. j

The house committee of the ■ VV.D.F.I . rest home met at the home, I “Kainga Moe.” on Thursday. Mrs.’ J. C. Wickham (Wanganui) was in the 1 chair and others present were Mes- i dames F. Brice (Marton;, H. R. Green | cKaiianga), W. Howell (Raumai) and i W. F. Field (Palmerston North),' secretary. Apologies for absence; were received from Mesdames H. ’ BeaLson, E. B. Jennings and J. A. ■ Harris. |

A motion oi sympathy with Mrs. Jennings, in her illness, was carried, and the secretary was asked to convey this message by lettei. The report submitted by the matron (Mrs. G. Cook) disclosed that there had been as many as ten guests in the home during the past month, which went to show that the home was becoming well and popularly known. Interesting letters were to hand from guests who had written in appreciation of the wonderful service the home provided, and the committee was pleased to know that the doctors who had sent convalescents there to recuperate after leaving hospital were loud in their praises oi the home as being an ideal place for that purpose. “Kainga Moe,” besides being a rest home or holiday house for women needing a rest, is also used as a training place for young domestics. For the first, year the trainees are to be young Maori girls, and already one girl has been placed in a splendid position where she enjoys many advantages hitherto unknown to some of our native girls. The Women’s Division is concentrating on this particular scheme of training girls for domestic work and is confident that success will attend its efforts in this direction.

Mrs. Wickham, Dominion president emeritus, who is chairman of the house committee, in reviewing the financial statement for the first aalf-year of the home’s working, said the response from branches all over New Zealand, not only by sending beautiful gifts but in sending donations, was striking evidence that the division regarded the rest home scheme as an opportunity to further the philanthropic side of its work. Accounts totalling £4B 10s 7d were passed for payment. The committee will not meet again until after the New Year.
