SOUTHLAND CRICKET SELECTOR

PLAYER OF ABILITY DR. G. H. UTTLEY. Southland cricket should be well served by the appointment of Dr. G. H. Uttley as sole selector of the representative teams this season. A former player of more than average ability, he has had a long association with the game, and in the last 10 years he has been actively associated with cricket in Southland as player, selector and administrator. His interest in the game and his knowledge of Southland players and conditions fully equip him to fill the position of selector creditably. Dr. Uttley’s playing days were spread over many years and several centres. When studying at the Otago University he played for the Albion Club in Dunedin; later he played in Oamaru and Masterton, and when he came to Invercargill in 1930 he played for several years in the Southland Boys’ High School first-grade team. He represented both North Otago and Wairarapa in many interprovincial games. A good all-rounder, Dr. Uttley’s best performances were as a batsman. He had a good grounding in correct batsmanship, but his solidity did not limit his stroke-making. Indeed . was an attractive batsman when in scoring mood, and even in his later playing clays he compiled some good scores. Soon after coming to Invercargill he was selected to play for Southland against North Otago but he stood down in favour of his son, Dr. Ken. •' Uttley, who later became one of the I best cricketers in New Zealand and who was captain of Otago’s Flunked Shield team. His younger son, L. M. (‘‘Buster’’) Uttley, also proved himself as a good cricketer; he, too, graduated to representative cricket, and in the last five or six years he was in the front rank of Southland’s best all-round, players. Dr. Uttley’s snort activities have not been confined to cricket. He was an enthusiastic Rugby player in his younger days. He was a member of the well-performed Otago University sides about 40 years ago, and in 1901 he represented Otago as half-back against Southland, Canterbury, Hawke’s Bay, Wellington and New South Wales. Before going to Invercargill Dr. Uttley was headmaster at Scots College, Wellington, and Wairarapa High School, Masterton. At those schools and also at the Southland Boys’ High School he gave much Time in fostering the game of cricket and in coach- ! ing the pupils in his charge.
