ON HAWERA TRACKS

STRATFORD CANDIDATES YESTERDAY'S GALLOPS The course proper along the back was available for fast work at Hawera yesterday morning when most of the local horses engaged at Stratford on Saturday were galloped. Although the going was a trifle heavy, a strong southerly wind contributed to fairly good times. Notium (Sexton) shaded Chief Lord (Ryan) throughout half a mile in 52 2-ssec. Chiitoro (Mills) and Gold Grip (Grylls) sprinted a couple of furlongs in 2Gsec. The former looks a promising galloper in the making. Fiancee (Ryan) stroke out freely over half a mile in 52 2-ssec. In a similar task Barry Boy (Sexton) and the Rulanut- —Artistry filly (Holland) recorded 51 2-ssec. The latter is to make her debut in the juvenile event on Saturday. Prime Quality (Sexton) and Bidens (McDonald) ran an easy half mile in 53 2-ssec. Prime Quality has improved a good deal with his outing on Labour Day. Little separated Kilometre (Sexton) anl Mahaina (Holland) at the conclusion of half a mile in 51 l-ssec. Both novices worked well. Ramleh (Farland) completed solid pacework by running throe furlongs in 38 3-ssec. He is to be tried over a distance at Stratford. Winsome Lu (Reilly) and Vai Pere (Farland) recorded 1.20 for approximately six furlongs, the last three in 38 3-5 Winsome Lu appreciated the soft conditions and she may show up on the roomy Stratford track. China Clipper (Sexton) held the measure of Marteni (Martarma— Rawene) at the end of three furlongs in 37sec. The Vaals—Airway filly (Ryan) displayed fine speed to lead Golden Orchid (McDonald) and Friesland (Sexton) over the first three of four furlongs in 36 2-ssec. The last named pair went on to complete the journey in 50 l-ssec. Friesland could not go with his companions in the early stages but he finished on strongly. However, he will require a good deal more work and at least a couple of races before he is seen anywhere near his best. Pretty Lass was let off with strong pacework. She will be ridden by W. Stevens on Saturday. Pretty Lass enjoyed anything but a clear passage at Bulls last week and her defeat can be safely passed over. A splendid finisher, the Jong straight at Stratford should bring about Nast improvement on her latest form.
