RIDER FOR CATALOGLE

CLP JOCKEX FOR N.Z. HORSE Received Oct. 31. 10.30 p.m. MELBOURNE, Oct. 31. E. McMenamin is mentioned as the rider of Catalogue in the Melbourne Cup and Gold Salute in the Derby. Catalogue, with F. Shean up, moved nicely over a mile, which he covered in 1.45, at Mentone to-day. The jockey N. Waterson has arrived from Sydney and will ride Pantier in the Cup. consolidated his position as leading jockey so far this season with 17 wins. Next come P. Atkins with 14, W. J. Broughton, W. J. Mudford and O. Evans 10, B. H. Morris and G. R. Tattersail 9. and A. Jenkins and K. W. McTavish 8. Hanover and Kahui are two Awapuni horses who have been nominated tor the Waikato spring meeting, the former being entcreu lor the Hurdles and the latter for seven iurlongs events. Mataroa and Black Robe, a pair from Bulls, are entered for the Waikato Cup and Tamahere Stakes respectively. Hunting Mint went very sore at Gisborne and has been turned out lor a long spell. The veteran .silver St teak has raced on a variety of courses all the way from Auckland to Invercargill, and has won on every one of them. Ten years old, the brown gelding has been claimed to be a back number, but that is far from beiig the case, and age has only partly dimmed his brilliance. His dead-heat at Gore was richly deceived, as he had been rather unlucky lately. At Wingatui he had to be checked when finishing fast; at Washdyke he was crossed at the barrier and put up a fine effort to get fourth; and on the hrst day at Gore he was one of those which almost lost their feet on a slippery patch in the top bend. The trainer of Reading. J. Cush, made an unusual wager at a Sydney meeting recently. He backed a horse to v. in at 10 to one, and then made an even money wager with the bookmaker that the horse he had backed would run last. Radiogram, the horse in question, was slow out of the barrier and trailed the held until the last furlong when he made up a little ground and finished with only one horse behind him. so the layer of the odds won both bets. Paper Slipper was too big to do himself justice at Motukarara, ana it is not likely he will make the necessary improvement to give him the opportunity of winning his third Stewards’ Handicap, states a Christchurch writer. The biggest disappointment at Motukarara on Saturday was Passaform, comments a Christchurch writer. He had a track to suit him. but it was evident that his short spell from racing had allowed him again to carry surplus condition, and he raced accordingly. His rider was busy with him over half a mile from home, but the Washdyke gelding could not improve his position. The race would do him a lot of good, however, and with one or two track gallops this week, he may be a much-improvecl horse by Saturday next; but. in the meantime, taking his Saturday's form as a guide, he can hardly be recommended as a Cup possibility. Nightcalms win in the Le Boris Handicap at Motukarara on Saturday will tend to bring him into further serious discussions for the Stewards’ Handicap, in which he will be ridden by A. E. Ellis, who rode him when he won the Brabazon Handicap at the Christchurch Hunt fixture in August last, and rode him on Saturday. He is one of the smartest beginners in the field, and his pace will enable him to gain a favourable position from the outset. Phenomenal acted in an unusual manner at the start of the Halswell Hack Handicap on Saturday at the Banks Peninsula and he did everything but fall over, and his rider. A. E. Ellis, had some narrow escapes from being dislodged. It was therefore no fault of the starter that the gelding was left standing on the mark, and with aim there was a goodly sum of : public’s money. As two previous nonstayers, St. Cloud and Lord Midas fought out the final issue of the six furlong journey Phenomenal would probably have taken a prominent part in the finish.
