TRIALS AT TRENTHAM
HORSES FOR RICCARTON SATURDAY’S GALLOPS WELLINGTON, Oct, 30. Trentham horses engaged in the New Zealand Cup and Stewards’ Handicap at Riccarton next Saturday were given important trials on Saturday morning. The weather was line and the inside of the trial grass track was slightly dead after Friday's rain. Yours Truly <H. Duncan), Tooley Street (T. Briggs), and Arctic King (S. Wilson) were sent a mile. Tooley Street soon opened a break and was four lengths clear of Yours Truly at the half-mile, reached in 50 4-ssec, but Yours Truly ran readily up to the leader in the straight and won the gallop by a length and a-half in Imin. 43 3-ssec., the final half in 52 4-ssee. Yours Truly’s effort was most attractive. Tooley Street, who is to be ridden in the Cup by H. N. Wiggins, also went satisfactorily, as he is a better horse kept in behind, which will probably be his tactics at Riccarton. Arctic King, with much the worst of the weights, was always many lengths back and finished eight lengths away, but he is a poor track worker when approaching his best. form. Siegmund tS. G. Robinson) was sent, a mite at three-quarter pace. He looks well enough, but. in the meantime he is a doubtful starter in the Cup, though he will race at Riccarton in other events. Peerless (.1. McCauley) beat Might (J. Lawler) by half a length over a mite in Imin. -17 sec, the last half-mile in 54 2-sscc. Neither Was fully extended. A decision whether Peerless will be run in the Cup was to be macle over the week-end. Might, is also doubtful, but, as he is to be retired shortly, his owner may decide in the end to give him his third chance in the Cup, as he is well seasoned with racing over the last live months. Trebor, the other Brentwood acceptor, is not going south, but will be reserved for middle-distance events at provincial meetings during the next couple of months. Dainty Sue <S. Paramorc) ran away from Silver River (A. G. PNewnham) at the end of seven furlongs in Imin. 33sec., the last, halfmile in 54scc. Dainty Sue is engaged in the Riccarton Handicap (9 furlongs), next. Saturday, and as she is improving all the time at present she is likely to return to the winners' list while in the south. Silver River will probably be handled in his hurdle engagements by Newnham. who rode him on the final day at Trentham. Globe Trotter (Newnham) was doing it well within himself over live furlongs in Imin. 6sec., the last halfmile in 53sec. H. Telford never asks the best of this horse in his gallops. Beaulivre For Sprint. Beaulivre (W. L. Aitken) had Kobi (Paramore) as his companion over six furlongs, and he was on the bit all the way in recording Imin. ISsec, the last half-mile in 52 2-ssec. Kobi, under harder riding, beat him to the post narrowly, but it would have been a different matter had the Beau Pere cole been touched. Mr. E. C. Harnett was present to see the gallop, which is one of the rare ones Beaulivre does in training, and he confirmed his trainer's statement that the colt, will definitely run in the Stewards’ Handicap. Hinerawe (Lawler) ran seven furlongs on her own in Imin. 31sec., the last half-mile in 53sec. She went very fast along the back. Lady Drake was given pacing work only. Brunhild (Paramore) was a length and a half in front of Yogi (Aitken) after dashing down from the three furlongs in 39 2-ssec. Yogi has picked up again during the past few days and the travelling experienced should do him a deal of good. Later on he is likely to develop very useful staying form. l-'or Welcome Stakes. The Welcome Stakes candidates, Enrich (Duncan) and Absolve (Newnham),were sprinted half, a mite on the two-year-old grass circuit in 51sec, the former finishing much the more resolutely. Prior to the Wellington meeting there was a doubt about which of these stablematc:; was the better, but Enrich appears now to be definitely superior and he is the fitter colt. All the visitors who remained at Trentham excepting S. J. Reid's quartet. have gone south. J. H. Jefferd's and L. G. Morris' horses going on Friday night. Reid leaves to-night, and the Trentham horses will be travelling on Tuesday and Wednesday. R. Reardon's team will now probably comrpise only Peerless, Hinerawe, and Lady Drake, beside Ruling Star, already at Riccarton. Lady Drake will not run till the later days.
