LOST HIS CAP

Rider Of Verey Lights INCIDENT AT BULLS NOTES AND COMMENTS An unusual incident at Bulls on Saturday might easily have lost the connections of Verey Lights the slake and trophy attached to the J. F. McKelvie Memorial Handicap, the principal race of the day. in the last half-furlong of the race C. B. Goulsbro, rider of Verey Lights, lost his cap x»uu v.ent on to win tne race. As he returned to the official enclosure he was handed the cap by a St. John Ambulance attendant, who had picked it up. It is understood that the stipendiary steward in attendance insisted that Goulsbro weigh in without the cap. and it was fortunate tor the ..upporit’rs of Verey Lights that the boy managed to draw the weight within the lib. allowed under the rules. However, the Rules of Racing, under 274 <l> <c», state: “Every riaer who touches (other than accidentally) any person or anything other than an article ot his own equipment before weighing in may be hned, suspended or disqualified, and his horse snail be uisquatified for the race, unless he satisfied the stewards that he was justified by extraordinary circumstances.” though the loss of the cap did not affect the result of the race, i appeared as if the incident could easJ.y have been attended by more seiious consequences, the entire absence of fraudulent intent being a factor in favour of those connected with Verey Lights. A feature of the Waverley and Rang.tikci meetings was the excellent management of the totalisators, and at eacn fixture the machine closed to scheduled time. This is in marked contiX't to some of tne meetings in the Auckland provincial ciicuits, vhcre delays of as much as half an hour are not infrequent. The promptness with which the totalisator business is handled is much appreciated by patrons, but the Rangitikei committee could well ai range to move the fence al the rear of the totalisator house to provide more room tor the pa>-out facilities. Win-and-place belting will operate at the Stratford meeting next Saturday. It is understood that several other clubs in the provincial ci/.uit are considering a change to this system. Because the acceptances lot* th? Olautau Racing Club’s meeting were so poor the meeting has been abandoned. but the club will ask the Racing Conference for another date. Some riding engagements announced for the ?<ew Zealand Cup and the .stewards Handicap, to be run on Saturday, are as follow:—W, J. Mudford. Yours Truly, Sleeveless; S. Wilson, Arctic King: W. J. Broughton. Globe Trotter; G. R. Tattersall. Siegmund; P. Atkins. Centrepoise. Beaulivre: A. E. Ellis. Royal Chief: L. J. Ellis. Passaform. W. Jenkins. Lady Furst; B. H. Morris, Peerless. Disdain. The exit gates from the Rangitikei: Racing Club s course at Bulls are j rather awkwardly situated to deal • with the largo number of motor-cars parked last Saturday, and perhaps the| club would appreciate a suggestion? that the gates be removed in order to enable a double line of cars to be | handled. Cars from Marton and the * Main Trunk district could make their I exit on the right-hand side of a line; of Wanganui and south-bound traffic. I Cars for the south of Bulls could well . be diverted from the main street after j leaving the course, turning down the side street before reaching the post■ office and coming out on the main | south road just below th° intersec-1 tion. The amount payable in Government taxation by the Wellington Racing; Club amount s : to 115.798. not including I amusement tax. which is expected to approach another £lOOO. Marton-trained horses had their fait measure of success at the Rangitikei meeting on Saturday, winning two | races and securing two seconds. The 1 Smilet. who carries the partnership! colours of Mr. L. K. Mcßeth and i Trainer F. C. McHugh, won the Trial i Stakes, thn opening event, and the; next ra< <°. the Sandon Hack Hurdles, i went io Air Shot, owned and trained; by Mr E. C. Haddock, of Marton.; Donegal, trained by L. .1. Jarvis, at i Marton, for Mr. James Bull, beat all | but Pekoe in the Rangitikei Plate. ; and Colossal Chief, trained by F. C. 1 McHugh for Mr. H. A. Glasgow, was i second to White Rajah in the Fare- ■ well Hack Handicap. In two of the i seven races there were no .Marton- I trained horses.
