COST OF TYRES
TEN PER CENT. INCREASE AUTHORITY OF TRIBUNAL. An increase of 10 per cent, on the retail and whofeale prices of all tyres and tubes, authorised by the Price Investigation Tribunal, came into force last Tuesday. Import restrictions had seriously affected the stock position in New Zealand. Firms with factories in Great Britain had not had their imports restricted in the first licensing period, but others had suffered a cut, it was .stated. Licences for the second period had provided for a 50 per cent, reduction in tyre imports. Increased prices for tyres from Canada and the United States were partly attributed to the depreciation of sterling. British tyre manufacturers were faced with greater costs ot production, while freights and insurance were also higher.
