MAORI CENTENARIAN
The death of a Maori centenarian, Mrs. Ngarori Delamerc, of the Whanau Apanui tribe, Opotiki, has occurred at the age of 105 years. Sir Apirana Ngata attended the tan-gi. The name of the tribe, Whanau Apanui, means children of Apanui! and Mrs. Delamere's ancestry could be traced on one side in a direct line to the great Apanui, and on the other tide to the Whakatohea tribe. She had in her own right the large greenstone mere which belonged to and was used by Apanui himself. After the historic war between the Ngatai (Torerej Maoris and her people she married Mr. Eru Delamere, and they were among the pioneers who carved their way along the coast to form new pas and prepare new battlements. Mrs. Delamere is survived by two daughters and four sons.
