“CITY OF BICYCLES”

CHRISTCHURCH “MYSTERY" HIKE NINE THOUSAND CYCLISTS IN PROCESSION [ Fcr Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 29. According to the police estimate, 9000 or more cyclists left Christchurch to-day on a "mystery” hike to celebrate the centenary of cycling, organised in aid of the St. John Ambulance Brigade. The reputation of Christchurch as the “City of Bicycles” was fully justified by the line of cyclists extending from Carlton Mill Bridge, in formation six deep, to the Canterbury Museum, a distance of a mile. Thousands of spectators filled the rest of the road, and traffic had to be stopped. The line moved off at 9.20 a.m. headed by a St. John Ambulance. It arrived at the New Brighton trotting grounds, taking about two hours to pass a point on the route. Here various races were organised and a "cavalcade of cycling.” representing the development of the bicycle, was presented. Three accidents occurred, none of them serious.
