VEREY LIGHTS

Outsider Surprises At Bulls McKELVIE MEMORIAL RACE RACE CALL WINS SPRINT c arrying only a third of the amount invested on the favourite, Verey Lights, outsider of the held for the McKevic Memorial Handicap at Bulls on Saturday, scored a surprise victory after leading all the way. A maiden until the f edding Easter meeting last year, this Night Raid mac** won the I'awhiti Hack Handicap at Hawera and the River Hack Handicap at Wanganui, but until Saturday had been unplaced this season. the McKelvie Handicap was the principal event on the programme lor the Rangitikei Racing C tub's spring meeting, which was held under ideai weather conditions. The attendance, in .-pite of petrol restrictions, was very large, but there was a slight drop 01 113 in the totalisator turnover, t1.j.937 being handled, as against £13,952 last year. Probably the smaller pool fot the amateur riders’ event accounted for the decrease, as last year the amount handled on the distance hacx event, which was dropped in favour of the Rangitikei Plate, was 1300 better than Saturday s pool fur that race. The track was in excellent order and the going was good, having been improved by the recent showers. The meeting was admirably controlled, and scheduled times were adhered tv throughout the day. The open sprint was won by the consistent Tainapc-owned Race Cail, who had been narrowly beaten at Waverley. form from v. hich meeting worked out well, as The Smiler, twice second on Labour Day, won the Trial Stakes, and Air Shot, second to Erebus, went one better oy winning the Sandon Hur dies, ihe Waverleyowned Kiosk geiding Pckoc won tne Rangitikei Plate from Donegal, and White Rajah, a winder at Ocaxi last month, beat the consistent Colossal Chief in the Farewell Hack Hanctcarp. Sir Crusoe, a three-year-old Defoe colt who has weighed in at each start this season, beat Night Eruption m the hack sprint, me Ohakea Hack Handicap. The Smiler wa& the only actual favourite on the uay to win. out witn the singl?-pool Lotaiisator there were no sensational dividends. After the McKelvie Memorial the trophies connected with that event and the Rangitikei Plate were presented to the respective winners by Mr. Rex Mcn.tivw, president of the Rangitikei Racing Club, who congratulated the winners, and expressed the club’s appreciation of the patronage accorded rur the trophy events. An inquiry was held alter the Sandon Hurdles into alleged interference with Du Maurier by me winner, Air Shot, at the last fence. Ihe committee found that Du Maurier did meet with slight interference through Air Shot hanging out. However, n, was considered that this did not aifect the insult and T. Tito’s explanation of his handling of Air shot was accepted. The Smiler Makes Good Th*' Smiler carried £l3O more than Deflation in Hr Trial Stains, and the public proved right, for the pan finished Ih-4 and oeconu. Deflation and Goldburn v. ere first to : now uut num Ruyai consurt, \» ainiutu and TiMJ Smiler, with tuatara and Moradabad next. Goldburn turned for home just ahead ot Royal Consort, with The Smiler on the rails and Waimutu outside him, followed by Deflation. The Smiler asserted nis claim once they straightened up. and he ran home a winner by a length from Deflation, who came through to take second place off Goldburn by a neck. Rare Away was fourth and Deiy, Segra. Tuatara and Trevelyn Hold were next to finish. Air shot Beats Du Maurier. Du Mauri* r v.as better backed than Spender and Air Shot in the Sandon Huidles, but. Air Snot beat the favourit*’ home. Golden Ridge ran out to the wing of each of the first three fences, ana Air Shot, jumped into the lead opposite the stands, being three lengths ahead of Du Mauriei. Golden Ridge, Battle Pomp and Golden Memory The last-named moved up to third berth along the back and followed Air Shot into the straight. with Du Maurier making another run on the outer. The fave urite had to be checked at the last fence, where Air Shot jumped jn front of him. and the leader then went, on to win bv a length ana a-half. Golden Memory was half a length behind the favourite, and half a furlong away were Spender, High Peer and Golden Ridge. Sir Crusoe at Last. Hunter’s Eve, Vascones and So Ciusoe were backed in that order lor the Ohakea Hack Handicap, but the favourite did not have the best ot passages and Sir Crusoe von from Kight Eruption. Sir Crusoe was smartest out from Hunter’s Eve and Vascones, but then Patahi and Filetto moved up behind the pacemaker, and at the half-mile S r Crusoe, Palahi. Filetto, Vascones, Varimond, Night Eruption and Hunter’s Eve was the order, the favourite being knocked back. Sir Crusoe turned for home clear of a bnuch and ran home an easy winner by two and ahalf lengths. Night Eruption dived through on the rails to get second place, a head in front of Little Dorth. noses separating Filetto. Vascones 2nd Vadanoe from the htird horse. Winner from Waverley. Earl Colossus was preferred to Donegal in the Rangitikei Plate, but the Waverley-owned Pekoe sprung a mild surprise. Baron Bold and Pekoe led Moonlight Bay, Earl Colossus. Ruenzori and Royal Romance out of the straight. Along the back Donegal moved up behind Baron Bold. Earl Colossus and Pekoe, who were bunched. Donegal was in line with Baron Bold and Earl Colossus at the straight entrance, with Prkon coming thiough. In the run to the judge pekoe did best to win by'

three-quarters of a length from Donegal, who was sore when he pulled up. Earl Colossus was threequarters of a length away, with Hokumai, Hanover, Kuenzori and Royal Romance next. Scyfried was lame on returning to the birdcage. Outsider of Seven Wins. Corroboree carried just a little more than Royal Star 11. in the J. F. McKelvic Memorial, but Verey Lights, the outsider of the field of seven, upset calculations by winning from Lord Moutoa. After a furlong Verey Lights took the lead from Gord Moutoa, with Royal Star IL, Cuisinier, Play On, Red Chief and Corroboree the order of the others. Corroboree made a forward move along the back and was up behind Verey Lights and Lord Moutoa at the half-mile. The favourite received a check at the three furlongs and Verey Lights and Lord Moutoa went on to lead into the straight from Red Chief, Corroboree, Royal Star IL and Play On. Verey Lights hung on well in the final stages to win ny a neck from Lord Moutoa. with Corroboree a length and a-ha If away, ahead of Red Chief. Then came Play On and Cuisinier, with Royal Star 11. last. Race Call Atones. Russian Ballet was the favourite for the Cliiton Handicap, with Race Cali ana Laughing Lass also well backed, and Race Cail made amends for luting the Waverley sprint. Screen Star and Russian Ballet showed out first from Laughing Lass, Sporting Gilt, Race Call and Ret. Cut, the last-named dwelling when the tapes went up. Red Cai ran round her field along the back and look tne lead at the thiee furlongs, with Screen Star, Spoiling Gill and Race Call next, Laughing Lass being checked. Red Cat and Race Call turned for home together, and Race Call can.e ion to win by halt a length from ' Screen Star, with Red Cat and Laugai ing Lass almost in iine with the second I norse. Flying Acre was backed half as * mucn again as Great Legion, Colossal I Chief and White Rajah m the Ftuei (veil Hack Handicap, which White Rajah won from Colossal Chief. Great Legion, Colincamps, Caution, Flying Acre, Vvhite Rajah, Colossal Chief and Regic.de comprised the leading division early, but snigger tan up fast to join Great Legion, and me jair led across the top a couple of lengths ahead of Colincamps, r lying Acrej Caution, Colossiu Chief and White Rajan. The last-named was the leader at the distance but he had to hoi 1 oft Colossal Chief’s late challenge to win by Ji ..tie more than half a length.
