"The circumstances are unusual as the case is the tirs: of the kind in Dunedin and is rare in the Dominion,’ stated the police, when the executive officers of the Working Men’s Social Club weie charged tnat the club, having no charter, supplied liquor to m< mbers, payment being made indirectly by a coupon of a lace value of 3d. The police stated the club was registered under the Friendly Societies. Registration Act and had applied for a charter, which had been declined. The police stated they honestly believed defendants acted in a mistaken conception of their rights. The club was well conducted and orderly and drinking activities played a very minor part. Each defendant was fined 10s.
