SEALING WORK PLANS FOR THIS SUMMER P.W.D. ENGINEERS REVIEW I 'The fact I hat work on the coni struction of the deviation on the Main 1 North Road on St. John’s Hill had i been delayed because the machinery i had been removen to expedite th« clearLig of slips on the WanganniRaetihi highway was mentioned by Mr. G. W. Sampson, public works on* , gineer, at iast night’s annual meeting -w of the Automobile Association (Wan- W. ganui). Mr. Sampson caid that if the machinery had not been available lhe road would have been blocked for at least a month. The Main Highways Board he said, had given instructions that tenders should be called for the sealing and reconstruction of the Main North Road from the Friends’ School to Goat Valley. He hoped that the plans for the work would be finished within two weeks, they having been approved by the board. Mr. Sampson said that only a primary coat, probably of light tar, would b* played on the road and the actual sealing would be carried out the following summer. Plans had been completed for a further length to Waitotara and provision would be made for the dork next year. Mr. Sampson said it was hoped th'i season to have the road from Bulls to north of Taihape scaled. Only a primary coat would be put on the road, wh/h was in need of reconstruction, the coat being to reduce maintenance costs and provide a dust-free road. He did not expect that there would b® much sealing work north of Taihape but. there might be a little in lhe top end. On the Wanganui-Raetihi highway, said Mr. Sampson, another four miles of road would be sealed. It was hoped to have the Aberfeldie HILI j sealed, probably with a dust-laying (oat. The other sealing would be carried to the foot of the Otoko Hill. J.f the summer was favourable it might be possible to seal the road over ta» hill and down to the Lakes Hill. Further work had been started in th® Waimarino County, where workmen were engaged on the first four mile.*. Plans were under way for a deviation to cut out Houghton’s Hill and there would be another deviation at th® Mangawhero. On the motion of lhe president, Mr. A. S. Burgess, It was decided U make representations to the Main Highways Board to have the whole of the road from Wanganui to Waltotara reconstructed and sealed thle summer.
