TAIHAPE TROOP’S SUCCESS. i A very successful and enjoyable j week-end was spent on the camping J grounds kindly granted by the ! Borough Council to the Taihape, Rae- | tihi and Ohakunc troop of Boy Scouts under the supervision of Group Scout Master T. Macinlyrc, of Taihape and ' Scoutmaster D. S. Chalmers of Rac- ‘ tihi assisted by A.S.M’s. To Macintyre i junr. and N. F. Mudford, of the Tai- ! hape group. Ideal weather added to . the pleasure of the occason. ! The camp was run in conjunction ! with the Labour Day rally, an annual ' event, to compete for the shield donated by Mr. John Quirk to the BoyScouts of the Wanganui Metropolitan I area. 1 The boys went into camp on Saturi day morning and tents sprang up I everywhere in workman-like fashion, i Much credit is due to the training the ; boys have received and also the discip- , line of the boys themselves as the ■ Group Scoutmaster was unable to be ' present, on Saturday morning. Much i credit, is also due to the assistant I Scoutmaster T. Macintyre junr. and ! Troop Loader N. Glenny for promptly ‘ carrying out the instructions given to them previously. As Sunday was visitors’ day - , parents turned up in large numbers to see the boys at work and play, although the attendance was not. so great as iast year. That may be owing to the fact, 1 the rally was held in the Ova) Domain 1 last year, and the public may not have I been acquainted with the fact that I this year's rally was to be held on the j camp site. There were 50 Scouts in j camp this year and had it not been I for the petrol restrictions and such, I there would have been at least, an- ■ other 50, from Marton. Wanganui, and . otiier towns. The boys thoroughly enjoyed the camp, and also the competitions were keenly contested by the individual teams, and each one endeavoured and hoped Io carry away the coveted prize, the Quirk Sheild, as the following results will show; - i Turn-out which includes genera! ■ smartness, of bearing, correctness of ! uniform, badges, staves, etc. Tai- ! hapo’s marks out. of a total of 100 were 91; Raetihi, 86; Ohakune, 71. ! lout of 200; for signalling, Taihape, 175; Raetihi, 114. The Taihape Troop will thus be the winers of the shield for 1939-40, by a margin of 62 marks f A camp fire was held on Sunday and Monday evening after tea; which was very much enjoyed by the boys and parents alike. An excellent programme was presented and A. S. M. Mudford assisted by others kept, the audience rocking with laughter with some of his sketches. The evening closed as usual with prayers, and then to bed. At the presentation of the Quirk Shield G. S. M. Macintyre congratulated his troop on winning the coveted prize and also praised the runners-up, Raej tihi, and said he was very pleased : with the Scout spirit which prevailed among the boys in all comp.i.itions, and hoped to have the opportunity of meeting them all again very soon. Scoutmaster Chalmers thanked G. S. M. Macintyre for the way the visitors I had been entertained and congratulated him and his troop on their success, and also mentioned the enormous amount of work that he (Mr. Macintyre) and his troop must have undertaken in preparation for this camp, what with arranging competitions, ground, and feeding etc. There must have been a tremendous amount ’ of work attached to the whole thing but, stated Mr. Chalmers, we are all goo‘d Scouts and have a duty to perform and that is making life pleasant for others. At the conclusion of the campfire, the boys marched to the station, tired but satisfied at having at least put in one good week-end.
