ANNUAL MEETING MARKED ENTHUSIASM (Own Correspondent.) PATEA, Oct. 26. I Speaking to the report, the presi- • dent, Mr. G. S. Fraser, said the club . had acquitted themselves well wher- : ever they went last season and main- ■ tained their reputation, at the annual ! meeting of the Patea Surf and Life- ! saving Club on Wednesday evening. .The main point had been that the 'local beach had'been free from any surf accidents, he continued, and the i dub had always been on duty. The i club had fulfilled its objects very ! satisfactorily and Patea could be reasonably proud of them and have absolute confidence in the bathing • facilities. The tenth annual report drew ati tention to the marked progress made ■by the club. The balance-sheet revealed the financial position as very satisfactory. Patrol work had been i carried out every Sunday during the i season but the members had not been , called on to make any rescues. Memi bership remained the same. “The club was represented,’’ the report continues, “at the West Coast • championshins at Wanganui, at events lat Ohawc. the Taranaki chamnioni ships al Opunake and the New Zealand championships at Auckland. i “At Wanganui and Ohawc no suc- ' cess was achieved, but at Opunake I the team was successful in winning ■ the 'Tabor Shield. This is indeed a I groat credit to the boys who took ! part and to their instructor. ‘‘At Auckland the team, fresh from I winning the Taranaki champion and I with hopes of bringing a trophy home, I were not placed in any surf events, ! but wore successful in winning a I chariot race. “At Patea the usual surf competitions were held, ideal conditions prevailing. The visiting teams were from Opunake, New Plymouth, Haw era and Wanganui. “The march-past for the Anson ('up vas won by Patea and the Patea Beach Shield was von by Ohawc B with Ohawc A second. The belt man’s race for the Quickenden Cup was won by Ohawc A with Patea A second. The relay race, round the buoys and back, was von by Ohl Boys, Ohawe being second and Patea third, tn this event Old Boys took the lead from the start and at the end of the third lap were a lap ahead and finished first with time to spare. “Twelve competitors took part in the annual bridge-to-beach race for the President’s Cup, the winner being Mr. R. Girling, who, not being a member of the club, was unable to accept the trophy. Mr. F. Verney. I! who was placed second, was presented i with the cup. I “In conclusion. the committee wishes to thank all those who have assisted us during the past season, the Domain Board for the use of the shed, Mr. Currie and the Borough Council for the use of rooms for meetings. the Press and all members for untiring efforts and assistance in furthering the objects of the club. ■ “Special thanks are due to the members of the Castlecliff Surf SecI tion who were so generous in lending : us their surf reel to take to the New i Zealand championships. This should be deeply appreciated by the members as without this co-operation we should have been unable to attend the championships, for it would have been useless taking our own reel.’’ A credit balance of £3l 6s 3d was ' shown in the balance-sheet.
