THERMAL ACTIVITY

J’OHt Tt GEYSER PJ,AYS FIVE SPECTACULAR SHOTS ROTORUA, Oct. 25. ' Five excellent displays by the lam- | ous Pohulu geyser in Hie Whakarewarewa thermal area provided an unl e?:pert ed and interesting al tract ion for I visitors to the thermal region this morning. The first activity of the geyser was I shortly after seven o'clock, when the height of the shot was about. 80ft., while about an hour later another shot of a. greater height, was given, the display lasting for several minutes. Three more displays were witnessed during the morning, but this afternoon the geyser a’gain became quiescent, although (he unusual height of the water this evening in the boiling cauldron alongside indicated a renewal of activity. Apart from one display, which was given last Wednesday, the Pohutu geyser, which formerly was the chief attraction at the Rotorua thermal area, had not played for about two years. About two months ago it was noticed that the Waikite Geyser was also becoming less active and since that time it has stopped playing altogether. As it is rarely that Waikite plays while Pohutu is also active, this also is a further indication of the possibility of the renewed, activity of Pohutu.
