ARAMOHO CROQUET CLUE

OPEN ENG OF SEASON ! The members of the Aramoho Croi quet Club opened their new season on Saturday afternoon. Although the weather was cold and overcast there was a good attendance of members and visitors from neighbouring clubs. Mrs. Bevege, the president, received the guests. She expressed her pleasure at the number present and welcomed the players and the representatives of sister dubs. The lawns had received a great, deal of care during the winter and were now- looking in ‘ good condition. The president ex- [ pressed her thanks to Lossrs. Downey ; and Aiken for the hours of valuable time they had given to the grounds, also to those who had helped make . the social afternoons held during the winter such a success. To all who had I given help, she extended the thanks * of the club. Last year they were lucky to receive the Wedderspoon Cup > and also the Inter-Club Shield, but I fiiis year the bisques had been consid- - erably reduced and they would have to work hard to try and retain the trophies. Referring to the serious crisis through which we were passing, she said that should the club be t ' called upon to help in any way, Ara- .’ moho would be willing to help do her . share. Mrs. Bevege thanked Mrs. Mc- * Chesney and Mrs. Dyke for gifts do- - nated for competitions. - The lawns were declared open by ~ Mr. J. J. Scott, who deputised for the - Mayor (Mr. W. J. Rogers), and Mrs. 5 Scott drove the first ball. Mrs. * Bevege and Mrs. Scott were the ref cipients of sprays of lily of the valley. * Mr. Harrison apologised for the ab- * sence of Mrs. A. Crawford (president ' of the Wanganui Croquet Association) 1 and on behalf of the association coni gratulated the club on the co/iditiOn * of the grounds. He said it was won- ’ derful what they nad done in the ? short time, and what they were doing was an asset, not only to the associai tion but to the city. He mentioned the achievements of the players and the trophies they had annexed. As a j inior club they had done very well indeed. 7hey had had their handicaps reduce,! but this ahvays induced better play.
