HAWKE’S BAY COLTS WIN AT MARTON

RANGITIKEI BEATEN WINNING BACKS COMBINE EFFECTIVELY A GOOD SCORING GAME (Own Correspondent). MARTON, Sept. 2. In a good scoring game Hawke’s Bay Colts beat Rangitikei here to-day by 21 points to 11. The combination of the Hawke's Bay backs won the game. Smith and Conole were particularly dangerous. For the forwards, O’Rourke and Marshall were always prominent. Rangitikei, who was awarded 22 free-kicks, was unable to feed their backs, both wings seeing little of the ball. The ’Bay forwards broke up quickly and, together with their inside backs, used spoiling tactics. For Rangitikei, A. Marshall was the best back, being quick to open up play. Lewis was nippy on occasions. Bush was seen to advantage when he did get the ball. Pye unsuccessfully essayed a penalty, which put the ’Bay on defence, Rangitikei nearly scoring when Bush kicked ahead, and following up fast caught Bligh in possession. Tile ’Bay were relieved when O'Rourke dribbled through, transferring to Peters, to Conole, who evaded Coles and passed to Smith, who ran round to score between the posts. Harris converted.— Hawke's Bay 8, Rangitikei Ji. Rangitikei attacked, Hallamore getting close to a score, but he lacked support. The Colts retaliated, Conole securing and forcing through Bush's tackle, passed to Smith, who again scored a runaway try.—Harris converted. ’Bay 13, Rangitikei 5. lllston put over a good penalty when several magpies were caught offside —'Bay 13, Rangitikei 8. Edwards got over the green line, but was called back, Rangitikei being awarded a free-kick. The magpie backs were handling well. Smith Snapped up, side-stepped Coles ano passed infield in front of the green posts. The greens swept play to the other end of the field. Lewis, Coles and Hallamore all handling. The move was held up for a knock-on. Marshall and Powdreli led an attack for the ’Bay Conole securing and scoring a try by slier pace. Haris converted.
