SCHOONER HOLMWOOD
SOLD FOR TIMBER TRADED TO WANGANUI WITH LUMBER BUILT AS THE FOREST HOME Once the four-masted schooner , Forest Home, which traded between [ the Pacific Coast of the United Stales : and New Zealand with Oregon pine i lumber, but of recent years used as a ■ coal hulk in Wellington Harbour, the j former vessel Holmwood was towed i yesterday from Wellington to Port ; Underwood in the Marlborough Sounds, where she is to be broken up. As the Forest Home, the vessel paid several visits io Wanganui about 20 I years ago with lumber and is wellknown to many people in the city. In 1923 the Forest Home was held up in Wellington by her crew because oi unpaid wages and, by order of the Admiralty Court, the vessel was seized, a , writ was nailed to one of her masts and she was later offered for sain by auction. Holm and Co. bought the Forest i Home for about £5OO or £6oo and , spent several thousand pounds in re- : fitting her to meet with New Zealand maritime the schooner being renamed as the lh;mwood. The Holmwood was I for a short period in the intercolonial coal trade, but her cargo capacity was insufficient to make her a paying proposition and she was soon withdrawn from the service. The Holm ’ ’ was then laid up in Wellington Harbour, where she has been use; 1 , as a coal hulk until her recent sale. There is much good timber in the o.d schooner and her purchaser intends to beach her and then dismantle he. for the timber. The Holmwood was built at Marsnfield, Oregon, of Oregon and pitch and pine. When the schooner left Wellington yesterday, towed by Hw motor-ship Port Whaagare Oregon masts, which gave her a : • ■-- tinctive appearance among Wellington’s hulks, were still .'tan ling.
