GRATEFUL FILM STAR

TRIBUTE TO PAIL LIKAS MICHAEL REDGRAVE’S CONFESSION England’s young stage and film star, Michael Redgrave, has been confessing how much he owes to the coaching and advice that Paul Lukas gave him while they were acting together in "The Lady Vanishes.” Although Mr. Redgrave had had considerable stage experience it was his first picture. He was nervous, unable to do anything right. He knew nothing of film technique, and it came as a shock to him to find that there was such a chasm of difference between stage and screen acting. Says Mr. Redgrave: “Allred Hitchcock, I know, was worried about me. For myself, I was vowing that lhe picture would be my first and last. Then Paul came to my rescue. My trouble, he explained, was due to camera shyness, and a tendency to overact. 1 would have to forget all about stage work and learn the new technique. “So lor two weeks Paul .spent hours of his spare time coaching, advising and giving me tips, helping me to overcome my faults. Every night he used to come to my fiat, where we went through lhe scenes I would be doing the next day. His kindness, patience and encouragement were marvellous, and at the end of a fortnight 1 knew the nicks. “If it had not been lor Paul. I am certain I would have been a terrible flop in ‘The Lady Vanishes,' and that would have ended my screen career.” When Paul Lukas went hack to Hollywood he sang lhe praises of Michael Redgrave in newspaper interviews, and as a result Hollywood has already made several advances to the English actor. At present Paul and Michael are together again in “A Window in London,” at Denham.
