HON. MARK FAGAN I XAXLMOIS VOTE IN UPPER HOUSE i Per Press Association j WELLINGTON, July 18. The Legislative Council went into camera this afternoon to elect a Speaker, Hon. Mark Fagan, who hc.j been Leader since the Labour Government came into office, was chosen by unanimous vote. He thanked members for his ejection and promised to safeguard all priveliges and rights. Every member of the council congratulated Mr. Fagan on his election and all spoke of his high qualities as a leader and great popularity with members, irrespective of political outlook. Attention to the fact that Mr. Fagan began life as a pit boy in the Aust.ra- ! iian tin mines, was called by Hon. T. ; i F. O’Byrne, to illustrate how Mr Fagan’s qualities had enabled him te ■ win his way in the world, and Hon. W. ‘ Perry said that Mr. Fagan’s election was heartening to all who believed in democracy, because it showed that grit and determination together with perseverance and fair play could raise a member of a democratic community from a lowly position to one of the highest in the land. The council adjourned at. 4.1.5 p.m till the ringing of the bells.
