OBITUARY

MR. BENJAMIN O’BRIEN i The death has occurred of Mr. Benjamin O'Brien, aged 79, a former constable m charge of the police stations lat Morrinsville and Waverley. Mi. O'Brien joined the Armed Constabul- , ary in 1881 at the time of the Parihaka disturbances in Taranaki, and later was drafted to the Permanent Artillery and Police Force. In 1890 h? ■was appointed to Waverley, where he i remained for 25 years, until his transfer to Morrinsville. In 1921 Mr O'Brien retired on superannuation and ; lived on his farm near Morrinsville. i Mr. and Mrs. O’Brien last year celcIbrated the golden anniversary of their wedding, which took place in [Wellington on February 1, 1888. Mr O’Brien is survived by his wife and four sons and four daughters. Three of Mr. O’Brien’s sons served during the Great War. One son, Mr. J. G. O’Brien, now of Morrinsville, was fullback for the New Zealand Army Rugby team which toured South Africa in 19i9, and subsequently represented Auckland and New Zealand. MR. HENRY FIELD The death occurred in Auckland recently of Mr. Henry Field, aged 84. Mr. Field came ta New Zealand by the ship Western Monarch, in January, 1889. For some years he was in business in Auckland, during which time he was also actively engaged in religious and temperance work. He was appointed in 1887 as secretary of the New Zealand Alliance, and in 1891 he

, became full-time secretary with hcadquarters in Wellington. Mr. Field was an active member of t the Methodist Church and was one of its local preachers. He was president of thte Local Preachers’ Association, vice-president of the Methodist Con ference and a director of the Young i Men’s Christ ian Association.
