ROYAL TOAST AT HASTINGS BLUE TIGER’S MISTAKE Royal Toast assumed the lead over the first fence in the Hawkes Bay Hunt Cup at Hastings on Saturday and he was never headed. He jumped splendidly throughout, though a little “chancily,” but he made the race a spectacular one. always holding a commanding lead of 15 to 20 lengths. Even though the hot favourite. Blue Tiger, was making up his ground fast when he fell through the wing of the last fence. Royal Toast was never in danger of defeat, scoring a very popular win for his owner-trainer. Mr. -Boy’’ Symes, writes “Moturoa” in the Hawke’s Bay Daily Mail. The diminutive Acron was always prominent and raced as far in front of the bunch as Royal Toast was in front of him. He gave a very sound, exhibition of jumping, but it looked as if he would have to concede second place to Blue Tiger when the latter tried to squeeze past him on the inside of the last fence. That was Arthur Lords error, for there was no room for the favourite, who was about a length behind as they rose at the obstacle. They collided. but Blue Tiger was forced on to the wing, through which he crashed, thus spoiling wh<d might have been an interesting finish. Count Winonyx, who was never really dangerous, plodded on for a poor third, well clear of Sabatini, while Given was the only other to complete the course. Umpire ran off at the first fence, and Hilaria’s rider lost his irons, pulling up a mile from home. Taken all round, it wa> a good exhibition of jumping, for the race wa.i run at a solid pace, thanks to th? pace-making of the winner. who wa. ; turned out in splendid ord<*r by his ©wn«*r-trainer.
