A special cable-la? ing machine, which makes a trench, lays the cable, and covers it with soil, is being used on the job. Engineers from* Wanganui and other centres are visiting Taihape to see the work carried out. A caterpillar tractor owned by Mr. E. E. Owen, is being utilised to haul the cable across country. Though the cable-laying machine has been used in other parts of New Zealand it is understood that this is the first time that it has been utilised in the type of country that lies between Bennett’s Siding and Mataroa. and the engineers are taking a keeg in-i terest in the experiment.
