VISITING FARMERS
CAMP IN WANGANUI YESTERDAY’S ACTIVITIES A comprehensive insight into the secondary industries of Wanganui was enjoyed yesterday by young farmers attending the education camp week being held by the Wanganui District Committee of the New Zealand Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs. More than. 50 of the visitors, who come from the Manawatu, Rangitikei and Taranaki districts, are billeted under the main grandstand at the Wanganui Racecourse.
During the morning, the young farmers, accompanied by several local members and a party from Eltham, visited the Wanganui Woollen Mills and Kempthorne, Prosser and Company’s fertiliser works at Aramoho. The afternoon was spent inspecting Bassett and Company’s timber mill and the Southern Cross Biscuit Factory and flour mills.
Last night the visitors were entertained at a sound film exhibition presented in the Victoria Hall by Mr. S. Freeman, Dominion organising-secre-tary of the Y.F.C. In addition to the highly instructive agricultural and general films, several military films w'ere screened, and interesting lectures on defence matters were given by Major G. H. Clifton and Captain B. Barrington, of Wellington. The visitors will be given an opportunity of seeing the methods adopted by successful farmers to-day, when a full-day tour will be made of the Fordell district. The tour will include a mole drainage demonstration and inspection of stud stock, crops and pastures at Messrs. Cranstone, Hunter and Mitchell's properties. This evening will be free.
