COOL STORES ENGINEER RETIRING

MR. E. HIBBARD, CASTLECLIFF TO BE RETAINED AS A CONSULTANT Mr. E. Hibbard, chief mechanical engineer to the Wanganui Harbour Board, is due for retirement. The matter was briefly discussed at yesterday's meeting of the board, when it was decided that Mr. Hibbard’s services be retained until the beginning of the new dairy season, August 1. As from August 1, Mr. Hibbard is to be retained as engineer-in-charge of the board’s plant, other than the cool stores, in respect of which he is

to act as consultant, as required, until the return of the dredge Kaione from Nelson, when the services of Mr. T. J. Atchison, engineer on the dredge, will be available to the board.

Mr. R. Gerrie is to succeed Mr. Hibbard as engineer in charge of the cool stores, as from August 1. Mr. R. Sinclair is to be first shift engineer and Mr. A. McNeill is to be second shift engineer. Mr. Hibbard came to Wanganui in 1892 as a junior engineer on the staff of the now defunct Wanganui Meat Freezing Company. In 1898 he was appointed chief engineer, having charge at the Castlecliff works as from then until the company was liquidated in 1926-27. The cool stores owned by the Meat Freezing Company were purchased by the Wanganui Harbour Board and Mr. Hibbard became engineer in the stores and was employed by the board as chief mechanical engineer when they were taken over.
