OIL JET IGNITED

FIRE ON THE WAHINE INSTANT ALARM GIVEN t Pel* Press Association 1 WELLINGTON, April 26. Fire, which fortunately was not attended by any serious consequences occurred in the after stokehold of the inter-island express steamer Wahine. The one fireman on watch was lighting up the oil burners of one of the ship’s boilers when a blowout occurred. The man’s torch ignited a spray of oil which was being pumped under pressure and drawn up the air shaft into the fan room immediately above the stokehold. An instant alarm was given. The brigade was also summoned, but by the time the engine reached the ship the danger was past. Beyond charring paintwork and some electric light and other fittings in the stokehold and fan room, very little damage was done. The departure of the Wahine was delayed for half an hour.
