TAIHAPE SCHOOL COMMITTEE

MONTHLY MEETING HELD j NGAWAKA BUS SERVICE | DISCUSSED.

(Own Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Taihape School Committee was held on • Monday evening, Rev. E. T. King pre- , siding over an attendance consisting , of Messrs. W. Jurgens, J. A. Mortland, • W. Paterson, W. Berridge, L. H. Haydon, Dr. H. M. Hay and the secretary > (Mr. J. A. Graham). An apology for ' unavoidable absence was received from ■ the headmaster (Mr. J. C. Whibley). A letter was received from the

Wanganui Education Board in reply to a request from the committee for a school bus service between Ngawaka and Taihape. The board pointed out that no tender had been received and consequently no further action could be taken. The question of running the round route had been considered but it was felt that the children from the State Farm Rolid and Mataroa Junction areas, would be called upon to travel too great a (Further District News on Page 12.) distance each day. The bus was put on in the first place for the children ' who formerly attended the Ngawaka and Raukura schools, and if the round trip was run, the children from the j State Farm Road and Mataroa June-j lion area would be picked up first in i the morning and dropped last at night : an-1 would have to travel approximately 42 miles each day. The board invited any practical | suggestions from the committee towards a solution of the problem. On the motion of Mr. Haydon, -it , was decided that the chairman and i secretary interview local taxi pro-! . prietors with a view to making tenta- i j tive proposals for a Ngawaka bus service. [ The Education Board wrote advis- , ing that the proposed tar-sealing of the playground at the Taihape School was being investigated. It was decided to write the board regarding the cost of the sealing and the date of - commencement. = The report of the visiting com--1 mittee was received. i The secretary was empowered to arrange bus transport for Utiku chil- = uren on the night of the school ball. ’• Messrs. W. Berridge, W. Jurgens v and Dr. Hay were appointed a visiting f committee for May. e The hiring of an orchestra the • school ball was left in the hands of ■ the headmaster, t Headmaster's Report. The headmaster’s monthly report ! read as follow:—Tickets are on sale ' for the school ball, and a meeting of j: ladies willing to help in the supperroom is called for Wednesday, April 26. I should like your decision about the hiring of a bus on the night of ? the ball for the benefit of Utiku, g Ohotu and Winiata children. Dur- ° ing the Easter holidays the chimneys were swept, and all wood bought for kindling has been cut into blocks. Maire for the wood fires has yet to be • delivered. Next, week we are to rea ceive a visit from Mr. H. B. Tomlinson, M.A., Inspector of Secondary I Schools. Furniture for the typing ■ room has been received from the Education Board.
