DEFENCE CONFERENCE
PROPOSAL TO LEND LORD i HANKEY i ARRANGEMENTS MADE FOR NEW ZEALAND i LONDON, March 19. 1 In the House of Commons Lieus tenant-Commander R. T. H. Fletcher ' (Labour) asked if the Government would consider sending Lord Hankey to the Defence Conference in New Zealand as his great knowledge and experience would render his presence invaluable. Mr. Neville Chamberlain said that J the Government would consider it, but the arrangements which had already been made would probably be found to be satisfactory. Lord Hankey retired from his posts of Secretary to the Cabinet, to the Committee of Imperial Defence, and ,* Clerk to the Privy Council in May last. 1 He was considered one of the greatest , public servants of a generation and t has been continuously at the centre of the Government machinery fnr 30 i years.
