VIEW OF NEW YORK TIMES AID FOR DEMOCRACIES Received March 22, 12.10 a.m. NEW YORK, March 21. “The outbreak of a general war in Europe is conceivable only in the event of an aggressive Germany or 3. disappointed Italy, egged on by Ger'man promises, pushes ahead to some I new conquest at the expense of England and France or some smaller nation whose integrity these Powers would defend," says the New York Times, in a leading article. “In .such a war there is no doubt where our interests would lie. They I would lie on the side of the nations engaged defending our own way of I life. We would serve American interests best by permitting democracies to acquire in our markets weapons for self-defence. - The enormous potential output of American war industries is a factor of immense importance to the world to-day. It is so large a factor that the adoption of the Pittman amendment could, in itself, be expected to play a part in resolving the present crisis in Europe. It would give Germany one additional important reason for not taking the risk of involving all Europe in a war and might help te keep the world at peace." The New York Herald -Tribune said the Pittman revision might work satisfactorily in the case of war in Europe, “but would compel us to deny i the Chinese a chance of getting American munitions, which was ridiculous. The neutrality act should be repealed outright/
