MIGHT MUST BE MASSED FOR RIGHT

THE ANSWER TO GERMANY ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY’S VIEW HUNGARIAN AND RUMANIAN TROOPS NOW FACE TO FACE (By Telesraph—Press Association—Copyright' Received March 21, 7.55 p.m. LONDON, March 21. The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Cosmo Lang, speaking in the House of Lords, said that Germany s action was undisguised, unashamed assertion that might was right. It was a challenge to the basis of civilised order among nations. The only answer must be given in terms which the German rulers understand. There must be a massing of might on the side of right. "While it is painful to contemplate the massing of forces, we are driven to do it because we are convinced that some things are more sacred than peace,” said Dr. Lang. ‘‘There must be union among all valuing the ideals of peace and freedom. Many have found co-operating with Russia difficult, but where supreme issues are concerned we must be ready to accept help from any quarter.” The Archbishop recalled his own appeal to the heads of the churches in Europe in 1935. and the issue of a simultaneous appeal for peace. He added that he was in a mind to renew the invitation, but much depended on whether the Pope would give leadership. It was not inconceivable that, under the Pope’s leadership, other Christian leaders would willingly issue an appeal. The Archbishop of Canterbury promised that all leaders <>f Anglican orthodox Protestant churches would give simultaneous support. THE MOBILISATION IN HUNGARY The Times’ Budapest correspondent says that a partial Hungarian mobilisation continues, but a computation of the numbers is impossible. A complete mobilisation may shortly be decreed. German and Italian material brought in in 1938 included 5000 trucks, thousands of motor-cars capable of mounting machine-guns. Infantry equipment, apparently from Austria, is brajid new. The morale, of the troops is poor, and the men are dejected. Perhaps 5 per eent. of the total population have been called to the colours. Cars and farm wagons are everywhere requisitioned, while, railway passenger traffic is disorganised and everything is directed against Rumania. Hungarian and Rumania troops are now face to face. NO ALARM AT PRESENT IN RUMANIA Poland has diplomatically intervened, but the outlook is not encouraging. There is no sign of alarm in Rumania. King Carol's advisers told him that there was no cause to fear immediate. attack from Herr Hitler or from Hungary. King Carol received the British .Minister (Sir .Reginald Hoc re >. OCCUPATION OF RUTHENIA COMPLETE \ message from Budapest says that it is officially announced that the occupation of Ruthenia has been completed. It is declared that the Hungarians and the Carpatho-Ukrainians will henceforth have an equal status as free citizens and there will be no discrimination religiously. The Ruthenians arc not lijwly to be placed under a minority status. An inspired statement explaining the military measures states: ‘‘ln view of the Rumanian concentration of frontier forces additional to normal effectives, Hungary has taken a similar measures. which is the customary reply to unusual troop movements in neighbouring countries.”
