OHAKUNE BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING (Own Correspondent.) OHAKUNE, March 21. The monthly meeting of the above v. -as held in the Council Chambers pres ded over by the Mayor, Mr. H. Delamar Crs. Spillar, Rush, Jordan, Profit tt, Standish, Clancy and Morrow were also present. Apologies were if-re.ved from Crs. Mahony and Cordon. A deputation was received from the Ohakune Amateur Cycling Club, who uaiie-1 on the council in confle lion v. •.! the completion of the cycle treck in the Ohakune Domain. Mr. W. Watson briefly outlined the difficulties in which the club was labouring and stated clay was available from Tohunga Road, through the P.W.D., provided the council could provide cartage of same. Mr. Rush stated that the amount of grit required would lx? between 12-15 yards and for which the club would endeavour to have supplied voluntarily. Several questions were asked. Later the deputation, after thanking the council, withdrew. Correspondence was received from the following: P. and T. Department, advising that owing to the heavy loss likely to be experienced in providing a public telephone at Ohakune it was regretted that such an installation could not be recommended. Waimarino County Council, advising that the Rangataua Town Board has been abolished by Order-in-Council dated January 21. 1939, and lhe town district area merged into the county of Waimarino. All arrangements made between the board and the Ohakune Borough Council relative to the issuing of any description by Rangataua residents must be referred to the Waimarino County Council. The Local Government Loans Board acknowledged receipt of the councils application for housing loan, and advised that the matter was being investigated. after which it will be submitted for consideration and the decision arrived at will be commumfeftteA in due course. The Hon. Minister of Internal Affairs conveyed his hearty congratulations and sincere thanks for the care and efficiency displayed in making preparations for the Physical Fitness Week. The New Zealand Municipal Electric Supply Association advised the council as an electric supply authority not to accept the proposed resolution as adopted by the Power Boards’ Association in regard to electricity supply amalgamation with the power boards. Notice was received from the Department of Labour, advising that

there are vacancies for the employment of 700 single men at the land development camps at Te Kuiti and Auckland and at the State Forest Service, Rotorua. Any man who, without good and sufficient reason, declines to accept should be treated as voluntarily unemployed. It was moved, on the motion of Cr. Morrow and seconded by Cr. Rush, that if possible four houses be erected on the pound site facing Miro Street. A sub-committee is to dea] wifh the proposed workers’ dwellings.
